When she woke, it was to a beautiful sunrise filled with the music of angels. It had been so long since she’d taken a moment to appreciate the hymns, she closed her eyes and lost herself in the melodies.

Eventually, she rolled over to discover her husband was standing at the sliding glass doors, staring out, his hands clasped behind his back. She admired his form from behind, and once again thought how lucky she was to have found her soulmate.

He must’ve sensed her watching him, because he turned around and smiled at her. “How did you sleep, my love?”

“I would’ve slept better had you been lying beside me.” She grinned back. “What time is it?”

“You woke up right on time. It’s nearly five. All the bars along the streets are closing now. It’s the ideal time to infiltrate The Demon Lair. Since I had all night, I was thinking how we might do this, and I came up with a plan I think might work. I’ll go in first, in rat form, and wait for all the workers to leave so I can open the door for you.”

“What if they don’t leave?”

“Then we’ll have a real problem.” He chuckled darkly.

Shaking her head, she rose and dressed to prepare for spying. She put on a pair of black jeans, followed by a black, long-sleeved shirt, and then she tied a piece of black cloth around her platinum hair to shield it from the light.

“You look like sin,” her husband said.

“We don’t have time for that right now.” She smiled. Somehow, he always managed to make her feel beautiful—whether it was with a look, a comment, or a touch. Her heart warmed.

Making sure no one was on the street, they leapt down from the balcony, landing on the concrete below with barely a sound. Vance gripped Victoria’s hands tightly as they sped in the direction of The Demon Lair.

As they neared the block where the bar was located, they picked up speed because the sun was nearly all the way above the horizon. They figured the door would disappear soon and assumed they wouldn’t be able to get it back by knocking on the concrete wall.

Vance released Victoria at the entry to the alley across the street and bolted for the already flickering entryway. She watched as he changed into a rat and slipped through the crack just before the door closed behind the last patron. She wrung her hands and stared at what was already beginning to look like nothing more than cinderblock. Her toes tapped on the concrete without her thinking about it as worry gnawed at her stomach. They weren’t sure exactly how the door worked, and she was anxious that he wouldn’t be able to open it from the inside during the day.

It seemed like it was a long time since he’d gone in, so she made her way across the street and waited where she recalled the doors being. She jumped when something hissed nearby, and when she quickly turned to see what it was, she found her husband’s smiling face.
